My Day

Try: “Am I busy Saturday?”, “Dentist Tuesday at 3, it is important”, “Cancel the hair appointment”.

    SMTWTFS

    ● something on   ★ important   ○ birthday or holiday   Touch a day to open it.

    Coming up

You can also say it above: “Add milk and eggs to my list”.

    How this works

Type what you need and press Add. Tap an item when it is in your cart. When you are done, press Clear checked. Press … next to an item to save it for later (it moves down to Saved for later, out of your way while you shop), to have it come back every so many days, to put it back on your list on a day you pick, or to take it off. More help is in Settings.

    How this works

This is your pantry’s inventory. When Clear checked is pressed after shopping, those items appear here. Pressing We’re out puts it back on your Groceries list. Remove item takes the item out of your pantry, then offers Undo, Restock (puts it on your Groceries list) or Delete (gone for good, never suggested again). Touch a group name (like Dairy & Eggs) to open or close it, or press Open all / Close all. Use + or − to keep the inventory count. Expiration date lets you note when it expires (the earliest one, if you have several), and the pantry warns you before and after. Check Settings for more detailed directions.

        How to use Beth's Day
        1. Ask a question. Tap & Speak, or type it and then press Send. For example: “Am I free Friday night?” or “What do I have today?”
        2. Add something. Say it the way you would tell a friend: “Dentist Tuesday at 3.” A card shows what I understood. Press Yes, save it.
        3. Mark it important. Say “it is important,” or tick the star box on the card. Important things get extra reminders.
        4. Change or cancel. “Move the dentist to 4.” or “Cancel the hair appointment.” You always get a card to check first.
        5. Look at your month. Touch any day to open it. Days shows a list instead.
        6. On a day. Press Add to this day to put something on it (the day is already filled in). Touch an appointment to Change it, Cancel it, Share it or mark it important. Say it next to them lets you speak, with no need to say which appointment or which day.
        7. Bigger writing. Press A+ at the top of the screen.
        8. Put an answer away. Press Close.
        What you can say

Say it the way you would tell a friend, or type it. A card shows what I understood, and nothing is saved until you press Yes. If the card is wrong, press No and say it again with the day, the time and what it is.

        Your calendar

        • “Dentist Tuesday at 3. It is important.”
        • “Lunch with Barb Friday at noon.”
        • “Mom’s birthday on February 14.” (no time makes it an all-day item)
        • “Vacation from July 7 to July 14.”
        • “Walk every morning at 8 for the next three months.”
        • “Pill organizer every Sunday at 9.”
        • “Yoga every Tuesday at 11 and every Thursday at 3, for the next six months.” (different times on different days: you get one card that lists both)
        • “Dinner Friday at 6 on the Family calendar.”
        • “Move the dentist to 4.”   “Cancel the hair appointment.”
        • Questions: “Am I free Friday night?”   “What do I have next week?”   “When is my dentist appointment?”   “Show me November 12.”

On a day (touch a day to open it)

        • Press Say it by Add to this day and just say “Dentist at 3.” or “Lunch with Barb at noon.” The day is already known.
        • Touch an appointment, press Say it, and say “move it to 4,” “make it important” or “cancel it.” You do not say which one.
        • A repeating appointment asks first: only this day, or every one.

        Your shopping list

        • “Add milk, eggs and 2 gallons of water.”
        • “We are out of coffee.”   “I need paper towels.”
        • “Add milk every 2 weeks.” (it comes back on your list by itself)
        • “Add light bulbs to the Hardware list.” (when you have more than one list)
        • “Take milk off the list.”   “I got the eggs.”   “What is on my list?”

        To do, pantry and recipes

        • “Add call the plumber to my to do list.”   “Put pay the water bill on my to do list for today.”
        • “Add change the hallway light to my to do list. It needs light bulbs.” (what you do not have goes on your Groceries list)
        • “We have rice, beans and pasta.”   “I have two lima beans and one red beans.” (each kind gets its own count)
        • “Save a recipe for chicken soup: chicken, carrots, celery, noodles.”
        • “Give me a recipe for pancakes.”   “What can I make?”   “What do I need for lasagna?”
        • “Add chicken soup to my list.” (only what is not in your pantry goes on it)

        If it does not understand

        • Say one thing at a time, with the day and the time. “Dentist Tuesday at 3” works better than “put me down for a thing sometime.”
        • Speaking in a noisy room can mishear. Look at the card before you press Yes, or type it instead.
        • Anything you do not want to say can be done with the buttons: touch a day in the month, or use the Shopping and Lists tabs.
        Sharing with other people
        1. Colored dots. When you share more than one calendar, each has its own color. The colored buttons above the month show or hide a calendar.
        2. Choose where it goes. Say “Dinner Friday at 6 on the Family calendar,” or pick the calendar on the card before you press Yes.
        3. Several shopping lists. Buttons above the shopping list switch between your lists. Managers can rename, add or delete lists with Edit lists beside them. Say “Add milk to the Groceries list.”
        4. View only. A calendar or list marked view only can be looked at but not changed.
        5. Your own sign-in. Everyone signs in with their own code or email and password, and has their own settings and reminders.

        For managers: People and sharing

        1. Three parts. People (one box each, with buttons to rename, add an email, set an easy code, send an invitation, or remove them), then Calendars and Shopping lists.
        2. Sharing is done on the calendar or list. Each one has a card that shows everybody. Pick what each person can do with it: Not shared, Can look, Can add and change or In charge. To give two people the same calendar, set both on its card. To take something away, choose Not shared.
        3. Where new things go. When someone can add to a calendar or list, a round button appears: …new appointments go here. That is where their new appointments or shopping items land when they do not pick one. Each person has one for calendars and one for lists.
        4. Deleting. Delete is on the card. It has to be empty first. If someone’s new things were going there, they are moved to another one they can add to, and the screen tells you which.
        5. What each person can use is shown in their own box, so you can check at a glance. To change it, use the cards.
        6. The first calendar is the one from before there were people. It is named after the person who set things up, and you can rename it on its card.
        7. Own calendar and list. If you tick Give them their own calendar and shopping list when adding a person, both are created right then, with that person In charge and set as the place their new things go.
        8. No email? That is fine. Press Set code to give them an easy code, or Invite for a link to send yourself. Add email puts one on later.
        9. Who sees what. Only managers see People and sharing. Everyone else sees just the calendars and lists shared with them. Press Add manager to let someone else do the same.
        10. Removing a person signs them out everywhere at once. You can also delete their own empty calendar and list at that time.
        How email works
        1. What is emailed. Your morning reminders, a copy of your shopping list when you press Email me this list, the optional monthly copy of your calendar, and invitations to new people.
        2. Do I need SendGrid? No. By default, email goes out through this server’s own mail, and that works. Some inboxes put it in spam, though. SendGrid is a free email service that makes it arrive reliably. It is optional: add it only if email goes missing.
        3. Adding SendGrid (managers). In Settings, Email, paste a SendGrid key and press Save the key. Make the key with only the Mail Send permission. Then set Emails say they are from to an address on a domain you have verified in SendGrid, and press Save this address. To check it, press Send me a test email under Reminders by email.
        4. Is the key safe? It is stored scrambled on this server and never shown again, not even to you. It is not included in backups. Only managers see the Email section. To use a different key, paste the new one. Take the key away goes back to the server’s own mail.
        5. Set up for you. Whoever runs this server can also put the key in the settings file, so you never have to. If they did, Settings says so.
How to use the Shopping list
        1. Add things. Press Shopping, type in the box, and press Add. You can type several at once: “milk, eggs, bread.” Or say it in the ask box: “Add milk and eggs to my list.”
        2. Find them fast. Things are sorted into store sections, like Produce and Dairy, so they are together in the aisle.
        3. Check it off. Tap an item when it is in your cart. It moves to In the cart. Tapped by mistake? Tap it again.
        4. Finish the trip. When you are done shopping, press Clear checked. Those items are put away.
        5. Buy it regularly. Press the … button next to an item and choose how often, like Every 2 weeks. It will come back on the list by itself.
        6. Take something off. Press … and choose Take off the list. Or say “Take milk off my list.”
        7. Suggestions. After a few trips, I may say “You usually buy this every 2 weeks.” Press Yes to keep adding it, or Not now.
        8. Take it with you. Press Email me this list on the Shopping screen. Or in the Reminders section below, choose to have the list in your morning email.
How to use Lists: To do, Groceries, Pantry and Recipes
        1. Where things are. Press Lists. The buttons under it are To do, Groceries, Pantry and Recipes.
        2. Pantry. This is your inventory: what you have at home. After a shopping trip, go to Groceries and press Clear checked: what you bought appears in the Pantry. Press We’re out when something runs out and it goes back on your Groceries list. The Remove item button only takes the item out of your pantry; it is not put on your list (you can press Undo or Put it on my list right after). To keep a count, say “I have two lima beans,” or add it by typing, then use + and −. When the last one goes, it is put on your Groceries list. Each kind is its own line, like Red beans and Lima beans. Expiration date on an item keeps the date (use the earliest one if you have several); items that expired or will within 30 days are listed at the top of the Pantry. You can also say “I have two cans of tomato soup that expire March 2027.”
        3. Save a recipe. Press Recipes, then Save a new recipe, and type the name and the ingredients. Or say it: “Save a recipe for chicken soup: chicken, carrots, celery.”
        4. Ask for a recipe. Say “Give me a recipe for chicken parmesan.” The assistant suggests one, with the ingredients and steps. Look it over, then press Save this recipe. It is a suggestion, not a tested recipe.
        5. Add what you need. Open a recipe and press Add what I need. Only the ingredients that are not in your pantry go on your Groceries list. Add ingredients to list adds them all.
        6. Categories. Press Edit categories on the Recipes page to make groups like Soups or Desserts (you can rename or delete them; deleting one never deletes a recipe). Pick a category when you save a recipe, or open a recipe and press Change or add to Category. (Change this recipe is for fixing its name, ingredients and notes.) With categories, the Recipes page shows one folding group each, with Open all / Close all. Recipes you have not sorted wait under Not sorted yet.
        7. Save a recipe from a file or photo. Press Recipes, then Save a recipe from a file or photo, and pick a Word document, a PDF, a text file or a picture of a recipe card (on a phone you can take the picture right then). I read it and show you the title, the ingredients and the steps. Look them over, then press Save this recipe. The file itself is not kept.
        8. Save a recipe from a web page. Press Recipes, then Save a recipe from a web page, and paste the address. Or paste the address into the ask box. I keep the ingredients and a link back to the page, and the steps stay on their site. A few sites will not let me read them; then you can type the ingredients yourself.
        9. What can I make? Say it, or press the button on Recipes. It shows what you can cook right now, and what is only one or two things short.
        10. To do. A plain list of things to get done. Tick one when it is done. Press Today on the ones for today, and they show on your welcome screen. Or say “Add call the plumber to my to do list.”
        11. Needs. Press Needs on a to do to say what it needs from the store, like light bulbs. It checks your pantry, and whatever you are missing is put on your Groceries list for you. Or say it all at once: “Add change the light bulb to my to do list, I need light bulbs.”
        12. Several lists (managers). When there is more than one shopping list, press Edit lists beside the list names to rename one, add one or take one away.
How Backups and Updates work (managers)
        1. Backups. A safe copy of everything is made every night and kept on this server. Settings, Backups shows the last one and how many are kept. Back up now makes one this minute. You can also have a copy emailed to you once a month.
        2. Updates. New versions come from one place and are checked for a signature before anything is changed. Under Settings, Updates you choose: By itself at night, Tell me first (a banner appears at the top, with Update now and Remind me tomorrow), or Not at all.
        3. Safe by design. Before any update the planner makes a backup, keeps its old files, installs the new ones, and checks it still starts. If it does not, it puts the old files back by itself. Your calendar and lists are never part of an update.
        4. Go back. After an update, Go back to the previous version in Settings, Updates restores the old files. Everything you saved stays.
